Fraudulent Unemployment Scheme Preys On Massachusetts Claimants

Updated 6/19/2020

Employers should watch out for fraudulent and imposter unemployment claims. There is currently a scheme going around of illegitimate unemployment claims, which is a part of a national unemployment fraud scheme. Scammers have been using stolen personal information and filing for unemployment.

Due to this the DUA is currently taking extra identity verification measures when you file an unemployment claim, causing delays in payments.

What should you do as an employer?

  • Be aware. Log into your Mass Unemployment Online account to review the employee’s monetary determinations being received. You can log in here
  • If you have an unemployment claim, confirm with your employee that they filed, the claim. If not, it is most likely a fraudulent claim.
  • If your employee confirms that the claim was not them, have them complete the fraud reporting form
  • UIfraud@detma.org with your Employer DUA number and Claimant ID found on the Monetary Determination Notice notifying them of the fraudulent claim

The fraud reporting form can be found on the Mass.gov website and looks like this:
